What is Electromagnetic Suspension System?

Finite Element Analysis of Electromagnetic Motorised Absorber System

“Finite Element Analysis of Electromagnetic Motorised Absorber System” is my title for my FYP..actually, the basic concept that I need to know is the suspension system. By looking my title, the are word ‘motorized’. So it’s refer to the vehicle. Basic things that I need to know is about the vehicle suspension system. Novel suspension concepts are required, not only to improve the vehicle’s dynamic performance, but also to enhance the fuel economy by utilizing regeneration functions. In the other word, we want to improve the suspension system. Furthermore, if we want to improve  the system suspension, we need the development of new-generation suspension systems necessitate advanced suspension components, such as springs and dampers. So, the ultimate goal of my FYP is to conduct feasibility study of the development of electromagnetic dampers for automotive suspension system applications.

For your information, electromagnetic dampers are forging the way as a new technology in vibration isolation systems such as vehicle suspension system. Which means, this is a new development in suspension system. Based on journals that I already read, in the system of the suspension, there are three (3) suspension system. The first (1st) one is passive system. Secondly (2nd) is semi-active suspension systems and the last one is active suspension system.  The comparison between the three of them, they were proved that active suspension systems have superior performance in terms of ride comfort and road-handling performances compared to their passive and semi-active counterparts in automotive application.

Later I will story the design and development of a new electromagnetic damper as a customized linear permanent magnet actuator to be used in active suspension systems. So, if you all wanna know more, all of you must follow my blog until the end of my FYP..hehehe.. Now, let me tell more about electromagnetic. If we talk about active suspension system, we must set in mind, it is about electromagnetic...active suspension system-electromagnetic. My proposed electromagnetic damper has energy harvesting capability. Unlike commercial passive/semi-active dampers that convert the vibration kinetic energy into heat, the dissipated energy in electromagnetic dampers can be regenerated as useful electrical energy. Although demonstrating superb performance, active suspensions still have some issues that mus be overcome. They have high energy  consumption, weight, and cost and are not fail-safe in case of a power break-down. Since the introduction of the electromagnetic dampers, the challenge was to address these drawbacks.

Because some of the weakness, hybrid electromagnetic dampers in this my FYP are potential solution to high weight, high cost, and fail-safety issues of an active suspension system. The hybrid electromagnetic damper utilizes the high performance of an active electromagnetic damper with the reliability of passive dampers in a single package, offering a fail-safe damper while decreasing weight and cost. So, two hybrid damper designs are proposed in my FYP.

If we think carefully, two hybrid damper design that I proposed in my FYP, there must be passive damping. Do you want to know why? It is demonstrated that the introduction of the passive damping can reduce power consumption and weight in an active automotive suspension system. The ultimate objective of my FYP1 is to employ existing suspension system and damper design knowledge together with new ideas from electromagnetic theories to develop new electromagnetic dampers. For the very first time, the eddy current damping effect is introduced for the automotive suspension applications.

To achieve the defined goals, numerical simulations, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using ANSYS software will be conducted. This simulation should be done by FYP2 but my supervisor want me do it in FYP1. Dr Razlan told me to get the drawing and graph if possible. Dr Razlan don't want to start the analysis at the next semester because many students will take a long time not to analysis, but to start analysis...I still not explore yet this ANSYS’s software because I'm right now focusing to write the methodologies.

What I did is only small portion of the growing research in automotive area, and it is hoped that the results obtained soon will lead to the realization of a safe and more superior automotive suspension system. Actually this electromagnetic suspension system is still a new thing in automotive suspension system. That’s all...this is a little bit about the introduction of my FYP that I can share to all of you..if you all wanna know in details about my FYP, wait for my next update..wait yaaaa!!

The Fourth Meeting : The Fundamental

Third Meeting with Dr.Ahmad Razlan bin Yusoff

Day: Wednesday

Date: 9th April 2014

Venue: FKP Admin

During the mid-sem break, I already finish the Chapter 2 : Literature Review for my FYP 1. When I go for discussion with my supervisor, Dr. Razlan, I give him the Chapter 2 to check my work. At first place he said my work so far is okay...no problem. I also explain to him that I want to do about permanent magnet which are has a three types: axially, radially and Halbach. Later, for verification results of three types of those permanent magnet will use simulation method, Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In literature review, I already explain about the three of them has variety method that can be used. The methods that can be used is finite element analysis (FEA); is use the experimental method and analytically method.

The second part, Dr. Razlan said that's all okay but...(oh my...still got 'but'??)...he said I need to explain from basic of the system. Basic concept. Explain what is axially, what is radially, what is Halbach..also, he advise to put some picture, to make them all clear. He actually suggest more good if more picture.

This is the draft of Chapter 2 that I need to be repair

"More picture, is more act as an engineer"- Dr Razlan said.

hahahahaha (this lough only during me typing for updating this blog )...overall, Dr. actually still cannot 'see' what I want to do clearly. As a normal person, me a little bit dissapointed..but not to Dr, but to myself. Because everything I did, Dr. still cannot 'see' them all through my Chapter 2...fuhhhhhh..Then, Dr. explain how to start from the basic. This time, the meeting run longer than before...almost an hour...after I got lectured by the Dr., I will go back hometown...my hometown? Kelantan......you know,I want to release my tension...hahahahaha..then, on the way to go to bus station, I meet a master student in mechanical..I story him what I have been discussed with Dr.. He said for sure I need to start from basic, the fundamental.... So, that's why we need to explain the fundamental. That's more better compare if we present but our supervisor don't understand what we do...then, when we were asked, we stuck, blur and cannot answer it. If we explain from the basic, and at the same time the Dr. or Prof. can understand, they are not going to ask a tough question..so the conclusion is, I got the point to repair my Chapter 2 of my FYP 1.... and also..still so many journal and thesis I need to read!!!! Be strongg!!

The thesis that Dr. Razlan want me to read

Hometown-FYP 1-Test 1

For this week, I can't spend a time for my beloved FYP 1, specifically for Chapter 2 : Literature Review. Happen like this because I'm so busy to face my revision for Test 1 of all subject. I repeat with capital TEST 1 FOR ALL SUBJECTS. Furthermore , all test for the next week, a week got 4 test. All together ya know..

shhhhh...quiet...slow...slow~~

Nahhh...I try plan to spend time for searching and reading the literature review but I failed to do that. Why? Because when I face my FYP, I just can't stop focus on to it, keep searching, and keep exploring until I got the input that I wanted..Searching and exploring will take more time and make me can't focus the time and space for the other subjects.

So, I decide to focus for searching and reading literature review on this middle semester's break. Something that me, myself willing to do is, I won't go back home just become of my beloved FYP 1..hehehehe...It's not I'm over excited, it's just I'm fully trying my all to do the best for FYP 1.

By the way, I already explained to my Abah and Mama why I'm not going back hometown this middle semester's break...but.....when I think back, I would like to try to back my hometown...maybe for 2 days only, just because I want to see the the face of Abah and Mama..Looking at them can release my tension, giving me an inspiration and for sure, for keep myself motivated. They are my everything! I love you Abah and Mama! Why? because they also the most adorable parents to me! ...wait as second, we engineer-wanna-be always play the word "why? why? why?" keep those word, because those word a the key of successful engineer!..ok, done off topic..hehe

I miss my home~~

Okay, back to the topic (I wish I write the real topic..arghh..always confused.. -_-' hahahaha)

Anyway this week my supervisor, Dr. Razlan, are not at his office..he got some work to do (he is busy man  ya know, that's a typical successful person) but he already give me some task for me to do. So, I can't discuss with him about my FYP 1. Then, I will write in details what actually my FYP 1 all about next week.

One more think before end this slot, wish me all the best in my Test 1 for all subjects!

Wait, one more, one more; this few week the weather become so hot. Don't forget to drink a plain water many2!

Inshaa Allah, see you all next time!

Third Meeting : Time Is Ticking!

Third Meeting with Dr.Ahmad Razlan bin Yusoff

Day: Friday

Date: 14th March 2014

Venue: FKP Admin

When I know that for this week, Dr. Razlan not at FKP...so, I need to meet him on Friday because the next week I need to submit my Chapter 1 of my FYP. When he done check all of my Chapter, still got many mistake...It.s not totally wrong actually but my Chapter 1 still doesn't meet the excellence criteria in the eyes of Dr. Razlan...easy talk, if I still send this writing, I cant have an 'A' marks for Chapter 1. I want an 'A' for my Chapter 1. I want to do my best until Dr. Razlan satisfied with my Chapter 1.

There are so many thing that I need to repair for my Chapter 1. The conclusion is, this weekend I needed to fill them with the correction of Chapter 1. Hehehe...'The Correction of Chapter 1' - I think its a good title to make a eerie movie :-P

You know what, I feel that this week the time run very fast! So tired for me to catch them up! Tick! Tick Tick! Time is ticking! Fuuhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Why you running so fast Mr. Time??

Ohh My!! Google Scholar???

Keep-it-up!

Last week wish is 8-9th of March 2014, I do really have my own plan. Firstly my plan is to do the correction for my Chapter 1  of FYP1 in two days, Friday and Saturday considering that I have no class in Friday..I already giving space at Friday for my FYP1....that's what I plan during the Open Registration (OR) for this semester, the sixth semester (I dunno how many time I repeat this plan of my..sorry guys!).

In the end, the whole day of my weekend, including Friday, were full for my correction of Chapter 1 and reading literature review. I takes quite a long time to understand every single thing, every single words, every single sentence in the journal. Huuuuhhh...so tired reading the journal, even to finish the first page can make me tired and a bit dizzy...hehehe...plus, the weather this few month quite hot...My mom told me to drink more water during days..Oppss..I stray from our topic! Oh my!!! Sorry!

I need to read more and more!

Back to the topic..ehemm..ehemm...okay..sometimes I feel a bit stuck, blur, hard to understand for what on earth that I'm reading! When that situation comes, I close for a while literature review (how to close journal? There a piece of paper, not a book!), and play a game in my android - Marble Lagend, very interesting game ever! Hahahaha~~ that's how I took the action when I felt stress...You know what, after I read many of journals,  I become more understand...little by little...

Dr.Razlan teach me how to search journal by using Google Scholar. He also want me to check out the references that located at the end of the page of the journal. That's also the fast way to find another journal that related with the journal we needed. Easy right? Yeahh...I only find that easy only after I was told by Dr. Razlan...hehehe

Google Scholar; Very useful in searching journal

I already email my Chapter 1 to Dr. Razlan....then, I will proceed to read more and more journal for my next writing; Chapter 2. Chapter 2 is about literature review. So, I will share to all of you my understanding in each journal that I will read soon. Wait for me ya all!

Psst, I guess, I need becoming a bookworm! :-P

Second Meeting : The Big Brain, The Big Challenges!

Second Meeting with Dr.Razlan

Day: Tuesday

Date: 4th March 2014, 2 p.m.

Venue: FKP Admin

I show the first draft for the chapter 1 at Dr. Razlan. After that, Dr. tell me what needs to be corrected. Dr. asked me to find the appropriate parameters for the objective problem. Examples given by Dr is demagnezation. Dr say let us explain our topic from the surface until the specific. Dr told me to do this to make sure the people can understand what we explain later. I have to start to explain from the suspension system.  Dr also remind me to not straightly jump into the topic about 'Electromagnetism Motorised Absorber System'.

After I met Dr, I understand more and more about my project. Dr. also asked me to read the thesis, "Design Of Active Suspension Control Based Upon Use of Tubular Linear Motor and Quarter-Car Model"  because the concept at there are seems to be same with my project. There still many things I need to do. Depending on the schedule this semester, I need to calculate precisely the correct timing for my life style. Huuhhhh...this will become a big challenges for me compare the past years of mine as a Universiti Malaysia Pahang's student.

Hurmm..somehow, always thinking make me tired early everyday. Maybe this is the way to train my brain before I becoming the excellent engineer...that's my dream!

Women also can be an excellent engineer. I do believe it!
